ABOUT

“[Spectrum] has become a go-to place for contemporary fare”
Anthony Tommasini, The New York Times

“a cozy, ambitious performing-arts space”
Steve Smith, The New Yorker

Spectrum was established to “foster innovation and virtuosity in the arts,” and has since asserted itself as one of New York City's enthusiastic venues for modernist, experimental music (and other endeavors), presenting over 2,400 events.

We started in Chelsea (briefly, 2012), then spent five years on the Lower East Side (2012-2017), followed by three years in the Brooklyn Navy Yard neighborhood (2017 – 2020 pandemic/hiatus). We re-opened in February 2022 on the waterfront in Red Hook, Brooklyn by generous arrangement with BWAC (Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Coalition). We strive to support a wide array of artistic practices, celebrating the robust diversity of NYC’s creative communities while also going to some length to present ambitious musicians and other artists from every continent – with the possible exception of Antarctica.

Our new space on the waterfront in Red Hook, Brooklyn allows for social distancing (and coherently-spatialized music) while the pandemic (by current indications) wanes and the city endeavors to revive. This largest-yet Spectrum is on the second floor (accessible by elevator) of the Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Coalition (BWAC) in a pre-Civil War warehouse overlooking the Statue of Liberty. Address: 481 Van Brunt, Door 7A, Red Hook, Brooklyn, 11231.
